VB uninstalls itself -- repeatedly

I recently did a fresh install of Ubuntu Intrepid and then installed VirtualBox. From the very beginning I had troubles. While creating a new machine I suddenly have drop-down items (like OS Type, etc.) that are blank. That's when I know it's happened. VirtualBox has been deleted from my PC. It's gone from the Ubuntu programs menu, and it's also missing from Synaptic altogether.

I have re-installed it a few times with the same result. Finally, I installed an older version of VB, and it lasted longer, but I had to reboot this morning, and it was gone again.

What would cause it to keep getting uninstalled?

Do you have any other programs running or installed that might cause this? Maybe some background service is running which removes it, like some malware (though I doubt that). If you install VB with root privileges, and after that run in normal user mode, with no service or daemon or whatever running that might cause this (like update-manager), you should see in the logs (/var/log) what is triggering this sudden removal).
