CD reading problem with Windows-Guest

Post by lord-of-linux »

Hello,

my father have VirtualBox 2.0 running on an 64-bit Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex and have trouble with this configuration very often.

Today he tried to import a CD into iTunes for use with his iPod Touch. iTunes recognizes the CD but if you press Import, the state doesn't change and iTunes is hung up. The same happens when I try to copy an audio-CD with nero, which I tried to test if it's an iTunes Problem. Both times we had to restart Ubuntu because VirtualBox fully crashed. (I think also within the kernel module, because VirtualBox restart wasn't possible.)

But there is something that surprised me: I successfully cleaned a CD-RW with Nero without any problems.

EDIT: With Audiograbber, another CD ripper, we get an ASPI-Error. So maybe there is a problem with ASPI? How could this be solved?

PS: There are also problems with the folder sharing module of VirtualBox. After some days of use without problem the shares aren't writable anymore.
PS2: I had used VirtualBox 1.5 I think for a long time without problems with shared folders or others. Are this VirtualBox >= 2.0 problems?

I haven't seen a crash, but when I try to import a CD with iTunes, it takes a very long time - longer than realtime CD playing. The DVD-ROM spins and sets every few seconds, so it seems like iTunes is only able to grab a bit of info here and there. VB problem, or a configuration problem?

If you are talking about an audio CD that you would use in your stereoset, like the ones you buy in a store, then it's a VB issue. The devs know about this. It's not possible to play or properly read audio CD's. Use your Host to rip the songs.

I don't realy understand why it isn't possible to play/ripp audio CDs? CD burning is possible and I thought reading would be much easier than writing.

But this problem and some problems with shared folders AND network mounts satisfied me to test VMware. There everything works like expected.

I was happy with VirtualBox on my machine and I think there I'll continue using Virtualbox but on my fathers PC it seems that we have to use VMware instead of VirtualBox. Maybe we can switch back sometimes when this bugs are solevd.
