hostif networking 2.1

Has anyone successfully upgraded host to 2.1 as well as the guests on it from 2.06 ?
i tried the upgrade on a test machine and im unable to get networking working on the guests in 2.1
im unable to find the command line commands to setup the new hostif networking? the manual tells you how to do it via the gui but I have virtualbox on a server so there is now gui.
