Hi,
I unfortunately had the same problem until today using Xubuntu 8.04 as host and WinXP SP1 as guest. After adding my shared folder to Windows everytime i opened "My Computer" or tried to access the folder Windows crashed and the only way to stop the VM was to "press the reset-button". I tried a few things to fix this and found a solution in installing Service Pack 2. It seems like the Guest Additions lost their support for Service Pack 1. I hope this helps someone.
Edit: Everything worked fine until an upgrade to VBox ver. 2.1.0.
