Installation Error on Vista Ultimate 64-bit

Post by BlackGerm »

Hi,

I am trying to install Virtual box on my Vista 64-bit installation.
I have tried with the following files and receive the same error message on both of them.
VirtualBox-2.1.0-41146-Win_amd64.msi
VirtualBox-2.0.6-39760-Win_amd64.msi

I have selected teh amd64.msi because I am using Vista in 64-bit version. The 32-bit version of Virtualbox will not even start the installation.

The error happens like this. I click the msi file, the installation wizard comes up and I process all necessary steps:
Next
"I accept the terms...." - Next
Next
Next
Install

Than I see the installation status.
Copying new files....
Rolling back installation...

And receive the following error message:
Sun xVM VirtualBox setup ended prematurely because of an error. Your system has not ben modified. To install this program at a later time, please run the installation again.

Click the Finish button to exit the Setup Wizard.
Any idea what the problem could be or how to solve this?

Thanks and Happy New Year
Black

Please use the search trick as shown in the Forum Posting Guide (bottom) to find more info on the forums. This has been asked before and the results should give you some more info, and a possible fix.

Hi there,

so, I searched through the forums and I tried several things, but if I get it right then there is not general solution to this bug, or?

If I have missed it then please post me a link to the solution. I looked and looked, googled and could not find a solution for it.

I would love to use this software, so any help is highly appreciated.

Cheers

Like stated before, I am too getting the same error, on the same builds that were mentioned by the OP. I have also tried other builds, but they have failed too. It looks to me that the installer is failing on a step that encounters the Windows Registry, but I have no idea why it would fail. If it is any help, I have listed my system specs below.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+
ASUS M2N4-SLI
2x 1GB Corsair XMS2 DDR2 800MHz
2x 1GB OCZ Platinum DDR2 800MHz
Western Digital 500GB SE16
Vista Home Premium x64

Germ, try this, this command will extract the MSI file to a directory of your choosing, now I just need to figure out the error message I get when trying to run the program

Run this under a Command Prompt as Administrator:

Code: Select all

msiexec /a filepath to MSI file /qb TARGETDIR=filepath to target folder

Be quiet and quit your bitchin'. If you know it so much better, you can take my place and answer all these questions. As you have only 2 posts, and the quality is unmeasurably low, prove yourself before you yell at someone.
This issue has been asked several times, and I don't have the time to look for the answer each time it's asked, I've got better things to do. I do this as a volunteer, keep that in mind.

Then why answer at all if you can't post something helpful other than to become a postwhore...

Because the link I posted has the info you need to find more info here on the forum. If you enter your error in that search trick for google, you will get the topics that describe it in more detail with some possible solutions. Did you read the search trick and explanation? Find anything useful? If you didn't for the last question, then you can say so without scolding.

Googled the issue without the trick. Found lots of sites with info. However, this appears to be an unresolved issue.

If anyone has a link to info on this that shows a solution, please post it here. Search is not yielding useful results.

You might want to take a look at http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?t=12309 for some work arounds. It's for the 32 bit version, but the tricks should also apply to the x64 package.

Just out of interest I did what Sasquatch suggested in the first place and did a google on vista VirtualBox setup ended prematurely site:virtualbox.org. This didn't take hours. It took seconds and pointed me to the posts and tickets that discuss this issue and the workarounds. So BlackGerm, touche, ronlevine, slosh it does seem to me that if you'd just taken the advice of a guy who clearly knows what he is talking about instead of flaming him then you would have saved yourselves a lot of wasted effort. So slosh why don't you just go and use Virtual PC. After all the MS forums will be a lot more helpful.
