Hi,
I'm using Ubuntu 8.10 and want to install a new copy of WinXP on a "New" virtual machine created by virtual box. When I start the boot CD of Windows XP to install it, I get after a few seconds the following error message (translated from french):
The file \i386\ntkrnlmp.exe cannot be found.
The error code is 3072

The installation cannot continue.
Press a key to quit.

Every time I try to install windows, this is what I get during the first step of the installation with the blue screen. The Windows CD I am using is an original copy.

What can I do?

Thanks for your help,

Not a problem related to virtualbox but to the cd, I believe.

Is there a way to download a clean copy of Windows XP, legally, knowing you have a legal copy (with the key) in the first place?

It's not advised, but it falls somewhat in the grey area of your license. You have to have a license for each machine configuration you install Windows on. Some licenses, like Retail, are a bit broader than others, like OEM (like your rescue disc).

Please, only continue here is the problem is with VB. I'm locking this thread as the cause is found and it's not in the scope of this forum.
