XP 32bit host/Ubuntu 8.10 64bit guest: installer crashes

Today I experimented with the 64bit support on 32bit hosts

Host: WinXP 32bit SP3
Guest: Ubuntu 8.10 64bit standard CD iso file. All Files reside on an NTFS partition.
VirtualBox 2.1.0

Running the "check cd for errors" gives no errors.
Ubuntu boots successfully from iso.
I can start the installer but I'm unable to install because I get random crashes after a while. It looks like the X-server is restarting and ubuntu resets to a freshly booted state, "forgetting" that the installation dialoge was still running. Tried several times, this error (or similar) occured at different stages of installation.

I was able to install ubuntu from my ubuntu 8.10 32bit host installation, even seems to run fine.

Back in XP, I could then boot the virtual ubuntu, but got strange behaviour again, application crashes and segfault errors.

Is this a known bug?
Should I investigate this further?

edit:
Running the Ubuntu memory test on XP host passes

edit:

After booting the ubuntu64-box in ubuntu host and then completing all pending updates in the guest i now seem to be able to run run the ubuntu64-box in XP. (testing only for 20 minutes)
Could it be the kernel update from -7 to -9 that fixes things? Or is it any one of the 200 updates i installed?

Inability to install from cd remains with the same setup of VirtualBox. It doesnt seem to be the X server restarting (as i claimed above), but applications just dissapear, often without error message

Assuming it's the same physical machine which you dual-boot, did you enter the exact same settings in both Hosts for the Guest? If you did, then you might want to create a bug report in the Bugtracker and attach the VB log file of the problematic run of the VM. You need a separate account for the bug system though.

I did some more testing today and I am still getting those mysterious dissapearing applications in the guest.

@sasquatch
Yes its the same .vdi file, settings were not identical but about the same before i experimented a bit. Will try with identical settings next time.

I had a look at the vbox log files but vbox does not even seem to notice the anomalies, neither does the guest ubuntu.
