VirtualBox 2.1.0 Network adapter bridging GSM device / ppp0

Hi,

I'm running virtualbox v2.1.0 under a ubuntu 8.10 64bit host (2.6.27-9-generic x86_64 GNU/Linux).

Thanks to the new host interface networking implementations for Linux hosts, I can easily bridge to eth0 my Windows VM in which I installed my office desktop and mount vpn in the guest.

Now, when I'm traveling, I would like to do the same with my usb GSM dongle.

Using networkmanager in ubuntu, setting a 3G GSM connexion is really easy (well for now ;) ).
ifcong show the new connexion as ppp0

Is there a way to "bridge" the network guest adapter to the host ppp0 ?

Thank you very much,
Typhoe

If you can't select the connection from the VM settings, you can always do it the old fashioned way. You have to create a TAP interface manually, as VB no longer supplies this utility, and bridge it to your GSM connection. However, it might not work properly. Check it on the host first if you still have connectivity with the bridge running, then boot the VM and see how that works. You might get a problem due to only one IP address available.

Thank you for your answer,

that's the solution I'm actually trying to use now.
And indeed, I encounter a problem as the GSM device only let me get one IP...

I'll post here if I managed to get a positive result.

Best regards,

In that case, check how you can share your internet connection on Linux with other machines. Instead of routing it to a physical interface, route it to the TAP interface. You don't need a bridge in that case. Create the TAP interfaces with the uml-utilities package.
