Difference between windows and linux host

Hi,
i've two type of use:
1. A server web/database, PBX, develop
2. A multimedia computer where any device pci or usb must used in 'any' VM for sound, TV ...

The VM can be linux, windows, OSx

Which is the faster host windows or linux?
A VM can see only the hardware recognize by host?
Which is the host (windows, linux) that can recognize any device and/or can show it to all VM?

If the host is windows or linux which version or release or 32/64?

Thank you.

The host does not really matter - what you prefer is what important.

Ok. But if i want run a PBX where is very important the speed, the linux VM run faster on windows host or linux host?

Now i've tested in a windows 2003 server. The first thing that i think is use windows host because have more drivers of linux. A sample: i've a promise raid sata board that with linux support is not good. While with windows is support, so i must use windows as host.

you should have no problem with a promise raid card, i have three of them with different linux distros (tx2-300 and onboard).

i find linux makes a better host as apart from being more stable, streamlined and secure, virtualbox seems to have more features and requires less hacking to get it working - such as bridging etc.

windows guests are better catered for in virtualbox - for instance 2.1.0 guest additions simply don't work for linux, they have always worked fine for windows.

your point #1, linux is going to make a much better webserver, database and development environment.

your point #2, windows will probably have better pci/usb device drivers - which won't work under virtualisation anyway.

osx/solaris aren't wonderfully well supported as guests or hosts.

we really need more info of what you want to do, does the pbx require specific hardware (pci modem?), are you just using asterix or openser sip/voip or what?

Thank you.
In my office i've windows 2003 server and i've created a VM Centos where in this day i install Asterisk an test it. In this server not there is a pci hardware for Asterisk, all the isdn and phone are connect to network with bridge device.

But from a my customer i've a server with a pci device with 4 isdn and the pbx is a iso where i haven't the permission of login. In this iso there is Centos + asterisk + proprietary web interface. Which is the best solution? Install centos as host and create 2 VM (windows 2003 server and PBX iso)?

Have you test asterisk on Virtual Box?

Asterisk is a VoIP server, and those need realtime handling of things. A VM does not always provide real time access to certain things, because the CPU speed is not the exact same as the Host. There is an overhead in it that makes it slower in a VM than a direct install.

If you want to run certain apps that require these real time handling, don't do it in a VM. The VM won't see the Host hardware anyway, so it doesn't matter if you have 0, 1, or 100 ISDN cards in your Host, the VM won't be able to use them.

Whats the difference between Linux & Windows Hosting? When I was buying my domain, it gave me the option of selecting an OS. I decided to go with Linux, but is there any major difference? Can you also assign file permission on Windows?

daaliya, this Q isn't related to VBox or VMs, so you should really expect an answer on this forum. I prefer Linux for its flexibility and the richness of the LAMP stack tools. Some prefer Windows 2003. If you want to discuss this further you should use your ISPs forum.

In running a PBX is where the very important is the speed, I think linux or windows is your host, it depends on the version.. their are versions of those two that is slow..
