If you're getting a valid IP address and are able to ping your gateway, most likely your host isn't connected to the Internet. So:
1) Try pinging your gateway. Get its IP with the "route -n" command. It is in the last line of the Gateway column.
2) Check /etc/resolv.conf and make certain that a "nameserver" line is there with a valid and pingable IP.
If the above items are OK, probably you're not connected to the outside world. Or maybe you're having a firewall problem. If you're using one, try to disable it and check the items above again.

If you don't run 2.1.0, then a ping will never work. Do a test with a webbrowser or telnet. You can also do a 'host
www.google.com', and if you get a response, you internet is working properly.
