Hi

Running version 2.0.4 , when I ask Virtualbox to check for updates, Virtualbox does not find a newer version even though version 2.1 is already out and ready for download.

I am running Linux Ubuntu 8.04 by the way.

Tried to install the manuall downloaded package " virtualbox-2.1:2.1.0-41146_Ubuntu_hardy_i386.deb " but GDebi package installer exits with an error saying:
Failed to install package virtualbox-2.1:2.1.0-41146_Ubuntu_hardy_i386.deb

Also, Synaptic package manager does not find any newer version than the one I have already installed.

Can you help ?

2.0.6 should be the last version the auto update should detect, as 2.1 is a new branch.

If you want to upgrade to 2.1, it's best to completly remove the previous branch first. In Synaptic, the new version will be shown as "New in repository" (until you update apt again), as VirtualBox-2.1.

If you want to run GDebi properly, run it as root directly. It doesn't always work if you run it with your normal user, hit "install package", fill in your password and let it install.

Thank you for the informative reply.

If I completely remove the current version, I notice that the directory .virtualbox remains in the file system. Is it correct that my VM (win XP) remains there and should just work rightaway when 2.1 is installed, or do I need to make a backup somehow, Snapshot ?

I tried removing and installing 2.1.0 manually, all went well, completed gues OS install win XP, but when I boot the guest, Windows crashes without bluescreen after a brief warning in WIndows saying that I should plug in the battery charger to the computer, which in fact is plugged in already.

So, I had to remove 2.1.0 and revert back to 2.0.6 which works fine.

Is this a known problem with 2.1.0 ?

Thanks for your advice

This is, AFAIK, not a known issue with 2.1.0. However, there are bound to be some bugs in a .0 release, so for now, you might want to stick to 2.0.6 and upgrade when 2.1.2 or higher is released.
