Win+Win screen resolution stuck at 800x600

I have just installed VirtualBox on my Windows XP host. I created a virtual machine running Windows XP, too (guest). I installed VM Additions and they do work - I can access shared folders, mouse integration works as expected. But I just can't set a larger resolution than 800x600. I tried just about everything I could think of, including adding CustomVideoMode and/or MaxGuestResolution to the XML file. Still, the resolution is stuck at 800x600 and won't change. I suspect I am missing something obvious, but I just can't find it.

Host: Windows XP SP3
Guest: Windows XP SP2
VirtualBox: v2.1.0
VM Additions: installed

Check the menu if the auto resize guest window is enabled. If it isn't, enable it, then resize the window of the Guest (maximize the window, go to full screen, etc.). Now it should resize.

It was enabled.

In any case, there's no difference whether Autoresize is enabled or disabled (and when disabled, what size the window is).

Install the GA again. That could fix it.

It didn't.

I found out that when I unlock (?) an emulated window (Host+L), I can then resize it to full size of my desktop (much larger than the guest's resolution), but other than that, no success.

I have had similar problems with my setup as well.

I am running Vbox 2.1 and Guest Additions on an Acer Aspire One with XP Pro SP3 as host and guest.

I found that if I did host+l when not in fullscreen then switched back then host+f it would switch into full screen resolution of 1024 x 600 instead of the 800 x 600 it had been staying in since I installed my virtual machine.
