Virtual box and intrepid Ubuntu 8.10: unable to open VM

I urgently need help so that I can use the content of the VB image of windows.
This is what is going wrong:
I run the xVM virtual box and it shows just one windows image available to load: win2k (snapshot 1) powered off.
I press start to load the image.
Initially it shows it is running then an error message appears:
FATAL: Could not read from the boot medium. System halted.
This has arisen after I reinstalled Intrepid. I wiped the root drive clean keeping the home on a separate drive. On advice I installed as a different user to the one originally working in intrepid.

Is there additional details in the machine log file?
From the Sun xVM VirtualBox GUI, press CTRL+L to see the machine logs.
One thing immediately comes to mind -- permission/owner problems? If you say you kept your home, but installed as a different user, maybe your old ~/.VirtualBox/... files have the wrong group id or user id?
Try: cd ~/.VirtualBox/ && ls -lhR *
In my case, all .vdi and .xml files are owned by me, in my group, with my user having rw permissions and group/other having no permissions.

I see an error in int13 (hard disk access) with a parameter-out-of-range.
Has any of your drive configuration changed? For example, did you used to have this virtual machine defined as having a PIIX3 IDE controller, but you've changed it to PIIX4? (Though that causes a BSOD for me, not a VB failure to start.) Are you using a raw partition?
If you cannot resolve this, and no-one else has any other ideas, I'd open up a bug ticket on the VirtualBox bug tracking web site. The VB developers will hopefully be able to tell you why/where/what causes this int13 error.
(BTW -- my old "PC Interrupts" bible tells me int13 function 02 is "read sector into memory".)

Wow. I am almost there. Thank you for your help.
Because of the size of the image, I decided that I must be using an old image. I have found a larger image. I used the discard button and it has loaded, but currently I can not see it. I have had this problem in the past and have to change the settings before win2k has fully loaded. Do you know of a better way of preventing the window from locking itself into minimise?
If I choose full screen, I can see the VB desktop but it blocks the screen and I can access any of the panels to run other ubuntu programs.

That's the whole idea about fullscreen. That you don't see the Host OS.

I was getting that no boot-able medium error. Turned out to be my having enabled dvd passthrough in the cd options. Unchecked it and the drives and mounted media were again usable.
We won't get the burning capability this way, of course. There's a bug report on it as I searched the forum and caught the work-around (disable dvd passthrough) and that fellow did the bug report on it.
Burning was weird in VirtualBox anyway. I'd get cdr burns from Nero on XP guest that would only be read on a Linux operating system, but Windows would think it was a blank cdr.
Here's hoping for fixes for both of those things eventually.
