I've tried everything I've seen posted but I can only get 8-bit color connecting to my virtual windows 2000 server. I can open it up in a virtualbox in 32 bit color and all the resolutions I want BUT when I try and connect to the virtual box with rdesktop the best I can get is 8 bit . I always get this message : WARNING: Remote desktop does not support colour depth 24; falling back to 8. No matter what depth I try I always end up back at 8 bit color. And yes I've installed the host additions.

Exactly what version Windows host are you running? Have you tried another RDP client like M$ Remote Desktop Connection to see which end the problem is on - host, RDP client, or VBox? If all else fails for some reason, you might want to consider using VNC instead until whatever problems you're having are worked out. You'll probably want to disable mouse integration for VNC though.

I can connect to other remote desktop clients in 24 and 32 bit color fine so I know it's not the client I'm using to connect with, it's the end system. I'm connecting to a windows 2000 server virtual box. VNC isn't an option because I'm only using the virtual box for the terminal services capability. I am connecting from a Solaris box with remote desktop to launch applications on the windows terminal server, however most applications need better than 8 bit color so the virtual box is worthless if I can't achieve better than 8 bit color. Any other suggestions people ?

Windows 2000 terminal server can not display more then 256 colors, this is OS version locked.

isn't 8 bit 16 color though? I can't even change it from 16 colors up to 256. I think 256 would be enough actually but I can't seem to get it to let me go up to 256.

No, 8 bit 256 colours. 4 bit is 16.

wow I wonder if there is a "fix" or "cheat" to make terminal services go above 256? Any ideas anyone? :?

Only with the citrix add-on stuff.

I was thinking about installing metaframe xp....I'm guessing this would help my problem ?

It would help with the resolution problem, not the problems you are going to have with citrix

did you try to increase your video memory on your vm's settings?

yeah appearantly what everyone said is correct and that it is a limitation in Windows 2000 terminal server and cannot be altered.

how about using remote desktop in windows xp to connect to terminal server. I have use this but only on remote administration mode. in remote desktop you can specify the screen resolution.

Nice idea but the problem lays with w2k server not the rdp client.
