version of virtualbox: 2.1.0
create a new virtual mashine (use the default settings for 32 bit debian linux os): 256MB ram / 8.6 GB harddrive (dynamic)

1. mount debian lenny iso image (net install/official one) and boot it
2. fallow the default installation but choose: 2 main partitions:
- 8 GB JFS
- 0,6 GB swap fs
installation fails during installing base packages.

The same situtation was tested with other debian lenny build.

When you choose ext3 filesystem everything works.

Have you also tested this on a real system? Lenny is still in testing stage, so it's possible that it's a Lenny bug.

That's not Lenny's bug. I used to install the operating system from that image several times using VMware Workstation (and on real system as well) and I get known Debian a little bit (I've been using this distribution for 3-4 years) and what I can say - debian is one of the most mature and popular non-enterprise distro I've seen that we can't ignore it. Most of the packages in testing/unstable or even experimental version is much more stable than in other distributions.

Anyway I downloaded another image (don't remember if it was stable or testing), but this time I downloaded the whole CD1 image (the previous installation was using NET-install-CD) because I thought virtualbox could have some network trouble. And the installation failed a few steps later after I ordered to install the basic operating system and chose the default settings (ext3 for / and about 0.5 GB of swap).

Update: So Debian can't be installed at all.

I'll test virtualbox on another windows xp host mashine.
But can anyone check if he/she has the same problem, please?

I got Debian Lenny on my Xubuntu 8.10 Host without any issues. Running on ext3 file system. Can't remember what swap setting I used, but RAM is 512 MB, so swap is probably the same.

That's linux OS envirenment and I install it on windows mashine.
Which virtualbox version have you tested?
Did you try to install that Debian or you just run it?
Thanks in advance

I had it installed on 2.0.6. I am now running 2.1.0 and Lenny still works.

Can you prepare another virtual mashine on windows host, please?
I just want to test if you are able to install Debian on 2.1.0.
I'll do that as well as soon as I got another windows (host) mashine.

That could be problematic, but lucky for you I still have a dualboot system. On the next Ubuntu release, my laptop won't have Windows on it anymore, and if I'm happy with it, so will my PC (though that would be a summer vacation project).
It might take some time, since it's the holiday season and I hardly boot to Windows (have to remind myself to do that).
