Question about VirtualBox 2.1.0 installation on Ubuntu 8.10

Hi! I just installed VirtualBox 2.1.0 on my 64-bit (AMD64) Ubuntu 8.10 system using the AMD64 deb file on the downloads page:

http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads

After the installation completed, I noticed there wasn't an icon added to any of the GNOME menus for VirtualBox. Should the menus have been updated by the installation process?

Thanks!

Check if you have the file VirtualBox.desktop in /usr/share/applications. It should be there. If you do, then it must be in your menu. Check the System menu for VB.

For the record, this is what it should say (this is taken from Xubuntu 8.10 32 bit).

Code: Select all

[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Version=1.0
Name=Sun xVM VirtualBox
GenericName=Virtual Machine
Type=Application
Exec=VirtualBox
TryExec=VirtualBox
DocPath=file:///usr/share/doc/virtualbox-2.1/UserManual.pdf
Icon=VBox
Categories=Emulator;System;X-MandrivaLinux-System;
Comment=Run several virtual systems on a single host computer
Comment[de]=Windows und andere Betriebssysteme unter Linux ausführen
Comment[sv]=Kör flera virtuella system på en enda värddator
Comment[ko]=?? ??
Some characters might not display properly, this is due to the Korean characters. You can ommit the Comment[xx] parts if you like. This is for locatisation only.

Thanks for the info. I DID have that file in the spot you mentioned. The menu item appeared after I logged out and logged back in again.

Thanks! :)

Peace...
