I've installed windows 2000 server several times and each time I try and make it a server (active directory starts to build) it crashes the virtual server and I have to completely reinstall. I've tried using w2k service pack 2,3 and 4 and each time as soon as I try and make it an AD server and the creation starts it crashes. Can you not make a windows 2000 server virtual box an Active Directory server?

I got Windows 2003 working without any problems, so the AD build should work. I will try it with windows 2000 server just as a test to see how that goes.
Edit: Sorry, can't test this, don't have the install cd of 2000 advanced server.

Until I'm done, please say what error you exactly get. Does VB crash, does your VM reboot with a BSOD?

In a Windows 2000 server brand new build it pops up automatically with a "Configure your server" box. I select this is the only server in my network I click next. The next screen asks me to set up active directory asking for a name for my domain, which I enter, then the following box asks the domain I have registered on the internet, which I enter. The next screen says the next process will take several minutes and to click next, but as soon as I do that it bombs my virtualbox out totally and it's no longer accessible period. I have to completely rebuild. I can't boot it or anything. this happens both at vm 2.0.6 and 2.1.0 and I've tried it several times and several rebuilds.

I managed to get an ISO of Advanced Server. On the Welcome to Server screen, I wanted to do what you did, but it said that there was already a server found, so I used dcpromo instead. That went smooth and installed without issues.

Maybe you need to use dcpromo instead of the 'wizard' thing. As for the VM settings, I used the default settings, even the NAT was default. During setup, it did wine about the DHCP setting, but I ignored it.

I will try using dcpromo instead of the stupid wizard. One other question, did you use a "growing disk" or create a full disk at vbox install? I'm using a "growing disk"

As I said, left everything as default, so it's also a dynamic VDI.
