Why? What is the USB proxy service?
Pls help! Thanx!

VirtualBox USB on linux is horribly not user friendly. I hope this changes in future.

It will change in the future. The VB team is currently working on a way to use the other USB system, and not the deprecated /proc/bus/usb system. Perhaps on the next release.
Now What?

So by following the link, I was able to modify my fstab and now the USB errors are gone...VirtualBox XP guest still doesnt recognize usb devices (ipod, photon x25, etc). Any thoughts?

Not all devices are supported or seen properly. Not much you can do about, but to fill in a bug report and hope that one of the devvers has the device to test it. See
http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Bugtracker for the bugtracker.

Hi, im new to virtualbox and not that experienced on linux although i've been using it for a while.
I was also given the same error than claci, but after following another thread and reading the Manual i menaged to solve it.
Now if i go to the Windows guest settings i can see some devices under USB (Mouse, Generic USB Mass Storage, etc..) but i am not able to access my Usb storage devices through the Windows Guest.
I can see these devices under Devices>USB Devices, but they're all in grey and i cannot activate them.
Ive searched in the Manual and Forums but still didnt find an answer. Can someone help me or lead me to answer that i might have missed in the forums?
I am using Ubuntu 8.10 and the guest is Windows XP SP2.

If the devices are grey, it means that you haven't fixed USB properly. The fstab entry should contain the ID of the group on your system, not the exact number that is mentioned there. Your VBoxUsers GID could be 200, and not the 124 that is mentioned in the FAQ.

If you have modified fstab correctly & the devices come up grayed it means you are not in the vboxusers group.
Add yourself to the vboxusers group re-login then you should be able to activate them.
Code: Select all
sudo usermod -G vboxusers -a `whoami`
