VB 2.1.0 Seamless mode -- new problem

I always want to use seamless mode. Linux AMD64 host (XP guest) with dual monitors. In the past, it worked ok ONLY if some Windows window was visible and the Windows windows won't go to the 2nd monitor.

So installed 2.1.0 (and the new guest additions too). Seamless mode works! Even with no windows open. Still won't go to the 2nd monitor. But there is one problem. If you try to leave seamless mode, I just get a "gray" rectangle where the window should be but no actual working window Host+Home does not bring up a menu at that point.

One other note. If you switch to seamless mode and then cancel at the warning dialog you are hosed. The menu will have seamless mode checked even though it isn't active and then you can't enter seamless mode.

Closing the window (via taskbar) still lets you save machine state so all is ok there. Trouble appears with or without 3d acceleration.

Window manager is KDE 4.2 (8.10 Kubuntu).

Anyone else seeing this? Of course, if you just stay in seamless mode its great!

Hmm lots of views but no replies. Is it just me having this problem?

I have also experienced this issue with VB 2.1.0. However, I believe it to be and issue with the window manager.

The way I got around it was to merge the two desktops into one BigDesktop. I happen to be using ATI's propiatary drivers but most distributions have a way for you to configure this. In effect you are no longer using Xinerama or Twinview to allow apps to be passed between desktops but have merged them.

This has allowed me to get 3840x1200 desktop space for seamless mode.

I have a similar problem. Using Opensuse 10.3 host, Vbox 2.1, XP SP2 with latest guest additions as the VM, KDE 4.1.3, Nvidia graphics card, desktop effects enabled.

When host+L is pressed Vbox comes out of seamless but there are no window borders.

Also, when Vbox first loads into seamless mode it somehow leaves a mask over most of the desktop until you click on the desktop or some other host window opens on the desktop.

The last version of Vbox that actually worked well for me in seamless mode with either compiz enabled or KDE 4 was 1.5.4.

Seamless mode appears to work better if no compiz or KDE 4 (kwin) desktop effects are disabled.

It kind of works so long as you stay in seamless mode.

This is frustrating

I basically upgraded all of my hardware, in fact, built one from scratch and passed over a few things like harddisk DVDroms , old settings (everything else is new) and on a Kubuntu 9.04 host running VirtualBox from sun direct (2.1.2) (Windows XP 32, Windows Server 2008 guest) , I am experiencing the same behaviour... It is frustrating with or without compositing enabled.

Is there a bug opened for this? my current work around is not fully functional but helps alleviate some pains is to show the desktop in the guest first before trying to turn off seamless mode. Would sure be nice if there was an easier way to get to "^HOME" too. I find it frustrating that seamless causes getting to that menu such a pain :(

Again, is there a bug opened for this? Do we have to start one?

You can search for bugs in the Bugtracker.

I blame KDE for it. I have Xfce4 and Compiz-Fusion and can go to and from seamless without any issue.

i don't really use seemless mode so can't be sure, but i think it worked fine in 2.1.2

its a known issue that 2.1.4 doesn't work [well] with compiz, its in the release notes.

Hi, I am new at virtualbox, but I do really like the application. Beautiful piece of software working very well!

To respond to the following issue:
One other note. If you switch to seamless mode and then cancel at the warning dialog you are hosed. The menu will have seamless mode checked even though it isn't active and then you can't enter seamless mode.
This seems to be the case in 2.2.2 as well on Mac OS X (10.5.7). I had to reboot my virtual machine to make it work again.

edit:
Found an open ticket in the bugtracker, but the ticket is related to Windows as host, seems to be the case with more hosts.

Our problems with seamless windows occurred when attempting to return to non-seamless mode.
Just portions of the desktop were visible.

This is with VirtualBox V2.2.2 and a recent KDE V4

Since the problem didn't occur with the Gnome desktop, we changed the KDE default windows manager (KVM) to Gnome's (Metacity).

That fixed it.

It's easy to make the change in KDE's System Settings / Default Applications form.
