vm's refuse to boot after upgrading to 2.1

Post by mcp »

Help!!!

None of my vm's will boot after I installed 2.1 over 2.06. I tried to down grade back to 2.06 but I got an error message when I tried my vm's which said that it couldn't read the files. I guess 2.1 changed them and I didn't save copies of them

NOW WHAT? I rely on this for work and I need a solution.

Provide us with helpful details.

What do you mean by "none of my vm's will boot"? Is there an error message? Do you at least get to the Sun VB BIOS splash screen? Are there any errors in the VB machine log files?

And just for that, is why backups are so important. VB came with a message about saving the files in the new format when I started it after the upgrade and offered to change the files, change them and backup the old ones or exit without changing anything. It should do this for everyone who upgrade.

When I click on one of the vm's a box opens, but remains black and then closes and vbox lists the vm as having aborted. Another vm opens a box which remains black the window then closes and vbox lists it as running, but nothing happens.

I didn't find any error messages in any of the log files.

Sasquatch,

Please kick me again. I should have been thinking more of preserving my setup instead of being anxious to try out the new features.

If it helps, I'm running vbox on Xandros 4.1.

I also noticed that the previous xml files (I hope the right ones) were labeled as .bak files so I'm hoping that I can downgrade and use them to get everything working once again.

Also I just tried to create a new vm using the vdi from another vm and it also failed. So I suspect somthing other than an incorrect setting in the xml file is going on here.

Since VB labels the VM as "aborted", there should be a reason in the machine log files.

From the VB GUI, click on "Machine -> Show Log..."

I looked at the log again and it reports that it did abort but no reason is listed.

Can you post the log file somewhere? (http://www.google.ca/search?q=temporary+file+hosting) There may be something there we can use to try and figure out why you cannot start your VMs.

Guess I should have been more specific. When I asked you to post your log file, I was hoping you'd post the one where the guest aborted.

I have a similar problem. I've used VirtualBox before and upgraded yesterday to version 2.1, but now suddenly my VM with Windows XP w/ SP3 crashes with a bluescreen. I run this on a Ubuntu Intrepid host. The bluescreen itself is only shown a second, or less, so I can't see what it says, but I may've glimpsed something about hard disk ...? So I suspect it to be hardware related.

The first time I ran this particular VM in VirtualBox 2.1, I got a slightly different result than all tries afterwards. The first time I see the bluescreen, and then it reboots, showing the bluescreen, and so on. The next time(s) I start the VM VirtualBox shows a dialog that informs me that it has stopped/crashed with a critical error and I get two options to continue, Ignore and Exit.

I've tried to make the log for the first run downloadable here (VBox.log): http://www.filedropper.com/vbox

And here's one of the logs of the next runs (example VBox.log.1): http://www.filedropper.com/vboxlog

There's a lot of info in these logs and I can't see why it crashes or what the difference between these two logs are, or if it gives you a clue to what's wrong, but I hope someone can tip me in the right direction of how to proceed.

Thanks for your help! :)

Actually I cannot access these log files. Could you just open a bug report and append (NOT cut'n'paste) these log files?

Ok, I don't know if this is a bug or not, but if you insist ...

Could you please tell me where on my system to find the log files?
A search for "vbox.lo*" didn't yield any results.

I can find out this myself although it may take some time.

Stephane,

Believe it or not this is the log file that was present after the vm aborted.

I finally did get Vbox downgraded back to 2.06, but I had to totally uninstall and purge it from my system and then reinstall everything. I also took the precaution of renaming the system folder so I had to recreate my vm. Fortuantely the vdi was not harmed. I can't imagine why it won't run. The only thing I can think of is that it needs somthing that is not present in my linux distro. But I did use the release specifically labeled for it.

i posted about this somewhere, all i did is open the xml files up, remove the tap network line, and then virtualbox could upgrade the files ok.

without doing that they showed as aborted and virtualbox couldn't even read the settings in.

Bump,

Can anyone tell me why VB 2.1 will install but will not run any vm? I've tried existing as well as trying to create a new one with the same results.
