Hi all
I keep getting the error above with the following description when i try to start virtualbox.

Effective UID is not root (euid=1000 egid=1000 uid=1000 gid=1000) (rc=-10)
It may help to reinstall VirtualBox.

Im a complete novice when it comes to linux so ANY help/pointers would be greatly appreciated.

gksudo VirtualBox - doesnt bring up any error messages but it dosnt seem to start VirtualBox either

Open your package manager and remove VB, then install it again. Be sure to purge it's config. You will lose any Host Interfaces you might have configured, but not your VM(s).

Ok I used Synaptics to remove completely including config files, then reinstalled but I still get the same error message.

I am running on Ubuntu hardy heron 8.04 on a Toshiba NB100. This uses lpia whereas the package I installed was meant for i386. when I used the force architecture to install it the kernel would never compile, but I could start the virtualbox software even though it then crashed when i tried to start my virtual machine. Could not uninstall it then as it said it wasnt installed and it didnt show up in Synaptics. so used the restore disk and set everything back to factory settings and then used a script (Ubuntu forums thread 962835) to convert the i386 package to lpia (this worked perfectly for Skype). Contrary to before this time the kernel compiled fine and the whole install process seems to work perfectly but everytime i try to start it up i get the error message.

Now you know the history is there anything else i can try?

Please use the search for your error. A part of it is best, like suprhardned or something like that. It happened to other users before. In the Forum FAQ is one possible solution. Use google for other solutions.

I have the same problem using Virtualbox on my gentoo system using the binary package.

Starting VirtualBox as root works fine, starting it as a normal user being in the vboxusers group I get the message described in the first post.

I tried the FAQ and google as proposed, but I can find no hint at all. I would be thankful if someone who found something can help me with a link.
