unable to start the virtual box on windows XP

Just installed the virtual box on XP, whenever I tried to start the virtual box, I am getting this error
"Could not create the default settings file 'c:\documents and settings\alex ju\.virtualbox\virtualbox.xml. Failed to create the VirtualBox Com object
The application will now terminate.
Callee RC: E_ACCESSDENIED (0x80070005) "

Looks like the virtual box put the .virtualbox directory under user profile folder and no users (including system administrator) can access or change permission / delete / move that folder.

Does anyone has the same problem? Any workarounds?

Thanks in advance!

-Alex

Try a reinstall of the application. Maybe a removal, reboot, reinstall is needed instead.

Hello,

i experienced exactly the same problem als alexju. XP Pro (German) with SP3 and Virtualbox 2.1.0 for i386.

Already tried uninstall, then reboot, then reinstall. Still got exactly the same error as described by alexju.

In another tread an update to a newer version (2.0.2, from 2.0.0) solved the problem. But 2.1.0 is newer than 2.0.2 - so I expected this to be fixed already?

Are there really no workarounds/bugfixes for this problem?

EDIT: created a second user account (administrator, too) on the same machine. Starting the Virtualbox worked there without any problems; no errors occurred.

--> think this confirms my first presumption that our problem seems to be caused by encrypted user's home directories. ... This could also be the explanation for the "access denied" errors.

Now there's just the question left how to decrypt one's own home-directory?

I surrendered, copied all my data and settings into a new user's profile and deleted the old one. I got tired of fishing for a solution any longer.

But if however someone finds one, it would be fine to describe it here :)
