Dear SunMicrosystems,

Please make VBOX available to the non-admin accounts! my school keeps wondering why i try to install this and i tell them its so we can have linux on these computers, they sit, stare, and wonder "what is linux" in their minds but they say just make sure it doesnt compromise security, make sure the proxies still work inside the VM. I wish this haste. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE! IM TIRED OF XP ON THIS F!*@#R

Simply not possible I'm afraid. VBox by it's very nature requires installing some unusual software on the host, perhaps including device drivers. This can't be done without admin privileges.

I would have thought you could make the case for VBox to your school: first I understand that it's free for academic use, second it means that students can do anything they like inside the guest VM, all without endanging the host. But - your schools admin still has to install VBox itself.

Not to mention the VMs. They are stored in your user profile folder and if your school uses roaming profiles and sync them on log off, there will be a massive network usage they probably don't want. And if you set it to use your network drive, it will cause heavy network usage too. I'm pretty sure that the systems are restored from an image every now and then, so saving it locally also isn't an option.

So then is it possible for it to be installed on a DVD or Flash Drive? (bad idea i know) and yes the school does utilise roaming accounts and they do sync on logoff...(wheres deep freeze when you need it

)

Check if the school computers can boot from USB. If they can, buy an external hard drive (best to buy a 2,5" one, as it often doesn't need a separate power, or goes through USB) and install Linux on it.

As for your question about the flash drive, there seems to be a portable version. But you won't find it here. It's likely to be a modified OSE version, so no USB and SATA support.
