Im running virtual box with Vista as host and Ubuntu as guest system. Im currently connecting using the default NAT configuration. The internet works independently on both systems. The problem is that when Im using the internet heavily on the Ubuntu side (for example downloading updates), the host internet connection dies or is extremely slow. Additionally, any other computers connected to the router also have an extremely slow or nil internet connection. This makes me suspect that there might be a problem with the router.

Router is Apple Snow Base station (very old). The host machine is wired to the router while other machines connect to the router wirelessly.

Does the same happen when you use the network as much on your Host? Or any other machine on the network?
Did you also try a new router? Maybe you can borrow one from a friend.

No, the host can use the internet connection normally, without adversely affecting other computers or the router. Ive noticed that every time I connect the guest I can no longer access the router for configuration. Im convinced is a router problem now. Ill try another router to see how it goes.

Your problematic machine is attached to the router with a wire, right? Have you tried Host Interface Networking yet? See the manual for how to set it all up. The Guest will become a part of the network that way, and not a 'stand alone' machine that needs the Host to access the internet.
