VB crashes randomly when running Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex)

Post by AzimuthDragon »

Apologies if this has been mentioned before and I missed it while searching.

I am using VirtualBox 2.0.6 on Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (32 bit) to run Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex), as far as I know it's the actual release, not a beta or alpha release.

However, at random times it seems, the window running Ubuntu will crash, even though the main window stays open, or the main window will crash while the Ubuntu window stays open. I've tried looking through the logs and I don't know what the problem is, I have the Guest Additions installed (I installed VirtualBox 2.0.6 yesterday, too) so I think the additions are up-to-date, is there anything anyone knows to help me?

Also, the Ubuntu install is fully updated and it seems to crash less than five minutes in, though while im doing different things. I've tried it in fullscreen and windowed to see if it might be a graphics problem, but I get the same result each time. The only consistency is that Firefox is usually open in Ubuntu when it crashes, though I am on different pages when it does fail.

I've had some of my Ubuntu guests up for over a week at a time, so I can tell you it normally runs fine.

What do you mean by "the main window stays open"? Are you talking about the VB GUI? The GUI can be opened & closed independent of the guests, so even if a guest crashes the GUI should be fine.

But "or the main window will crash while the Ubuntu window stays open"??? Are we still talking about the Sun xVM VirtualBox GUI window? The one that lists all of the guests, and lets you configure them? That window is crashing?

To go back to your guest crashing: what happens when it crashes? Does the guest automatically reboot and restart, like the guest had a kernel panic? Or does VB put up a box saying something bad happened and the guest had to be shut down?

When it crashes, a Windows 'VirtualBox.exe has encountered an error and needs to close.' window opens, and when I close that window (via either Send or Don't Send) either the Guest Ubuntu window will close, or the main VirtualBox window that lets you launch and configure the machines will close. More frequently the Guest window closes.

To be clear, when i say the guest crashes, I mean that the 'VirtualBox.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close.' error shows up on my host XP Professional operating system. Ubuntu itself is stable, it's the VirtualBox install on my host machine that's crashing.

My guest machine has never errored out or panicked while running, but for some reason VirtualBox keeps crashing on my host OS, and as a result, the window containing my guest OS disappears and loses anything that hasn't been saved.

I can get a screenshot next time it happens if that would help.

No, I doubt a screenshot would be of any help.

I suggest you open up a ticket on the VB bug tracker site. Note you'll need to register a username, since it and the forums don't share usernames. http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Bugtracker

Forum admins: Can this thread please be moved from "Linux Guests" to "VirtualBox On Windows Hosts"?
