Hello,
I would be pleased if you reenable installation of VirtualBox 1.6.x and 2.x
on W2k,SP4,
as this is the "last free" operating system of Microsoft, without software activation.
The last download of Virtualbox which installs on W2k,SP4 is
VirtualBox_1.5.6-1_Win_x86.msi
I just found the download offer
http://www.virtualbox.org/download/
Ok. Microsoft tries to unsupport W2k...
its ok if you have a nag screen that W2k is officially not supported anymore... but I would be PLEASED if I can use a working VirtualBox 2.x on my W2k.SP4.
Sincerely
Rolf

The reason 1.6+ no longer support Windows 2000 is because there are some API's used that are not available in Windows 2000. Especially the technology AMD-v/VT-x are not supported by 2k.

If you search the forum, there are fixes to get 1.6.x to install, but as Sasquatch says there are too many features that VB assumes that Win2K doesn't support, which makes it not worth supporting it as a host. I don't think that you will get any traction with the developers on this one. Sorry.

Please offer latest VirtualBox 1.5.x release for W2k host u
1)
Would you please be so kind and tell me the threads (or keywords) to find the fixes to run 1.6.x on W2k ?
I failed...
2)
Please offer latest VirtualBox 1.5.x release for W2k host users, with sources.
2a) So that anybody HAS the chance to check
what changed from 1.5.x (perfectly working on w2k) to 1.6.x.
2b) And so that any faithful w2k user has the chance to use the latest version of your product on his computer.
Sorry I did not download the sources of Virtualbox 1.5.6....
Btw, its really useful to use W2k as host to run Linux or WinXp in a box
.
Sincerely
Rolf

Re: Please offer latest VirtualBox 1.5.x release for W2k ho
runs on Solaris and Applemac host, support virtual SATA drives in the Guest - do you need that?to check
what changed from 1.5.x (perfectly working on w2k) to 1.6.x.
and 64bit guest support on 64bit host (with AMD-V or intel VT-x capable CPU) for version 2.x.x - there is no 64bit w2k: you cant use that feature.
dump w2k to a safe place outside your computer, install linux and the latest vbox, restore w2k into virtual2b) And so that any faithful w2k user has the chance to use the latest version of your product on his computer.

Indeed a very good idea (beyond all advising people to upgrade).fixedwheel wrote: dump w2k to a safe place outside your computer, install linux and the latest vbox, restore w2k into virtual

Not really.
* I am using an XP2100 PC for video editing, my Windows video editing software works perfektly on W2k, no reason to switch to awfull Linux tools, nor do such video tools work on VirtualPCs
* I use an ISDN Modem for FAX, my WIndows software works, no chance to have this software run on Vista or Linux
* The driver solution for W2k is still good ( and hopefully Ebay a good source for the next 10 years, to get hardware replacements)
* Most tools just for Win98SE and W2k are still without activation, both commercial and freeware - I LOVE that.
I fact, on another PC, I will give Linux a second chance ( I started Linux in 1995), with OpenSUSE soon.
Especially I can reinstall W2k like Linux as many times as I want...
b) I am using VirtualPC2004, frequently, which runs on w2k.
I heard the rumour that VirtualBox 2.x can now load VirtualPC2004 images. Is that right ?! Or might this at least be an expected future feature ?
c) W2k is the ideal guest OS, as most software of the 1990th still works on it, and all commercial (Microsoft) software up to names with 2005.
So its a "millenium software" much more worth than predecessors or follow-ups.
Especially on VirtualPC2004, its VERY fast, much faster than WinXP.
But if software developers now try to get rid of W2k compatibilty, its not worth anymore to have a virtual W2k, as it cannot be used anymore for testing (or test-installing ) of any new own or 3rd-party software....
So its ideal to have W2k with virtual W2k on the same computer
Sincerely
Rolf

Ups... I did not recognize this option, so far.xasx wrote: I think they can be checked out from svn, can't they?
Thanks.
In fact I am not experienced with svn of opensource projects.
I see
http://www.virtualbox.org/browse
but I did not find out where binaries and source archives for certain builds ( 1.5.x) are in the tree, after trying a few minutes.
Please help me with some advice.
Especially the people who might be interested in the W2k versions want to be urged to recompile it... so are binaries in the svn ?!
Sincerely
Rolf

Hey Rolf!hemmerling wrote:Please help me with some advice.
if you could get to know which revision the wanted 1.5.x version of VBox has you can query the source from the website-svn-browser like this: (this will show you revision 10000) There's also an edit-box in the upper right corner of the browsing interface where you can enter the desired revision. Good luck.
