I have been running VirtualPC (Vista Host, Ubuntu 7.10 Guest) for a while but became convinced that it was causing BSODs with NetIO.SYS (using windbg tools to examine crash dumps). I figured this was partly due to the virtual network drivers it installs.
Anyway, I installed Virtualbox & installed Ubuntu 8.10 as the guest OS. With VirtualPC I used the direct networking but with VirtualBox I used the NAT networking. I chose not to install USB support when installing
It all seemed fine except that when putting a USB key in explorer started crashing. Even closing virtualbox / logging out & logging back in had explorer crashing every time I would try to open My Computer etc. etc.
This is what was recorded in event viewer:
Faulting application Explorer.EXE, version 6.0.6001.18000, time stamp 0x47918e5d, faulting module SHELL32.dll, version 6.0.6001.18062, time stamp 0x4810129c, exception code 0xc0000096, fault offset 0x00125a01, process id 0xcec, application start time 0x01c94bbb4ef06250.
I have never had this happen before on my Vista Ultimate machine (almost a year old) and since uninstalling Virtualbox have not had it happen again.
Is it possible this issue was caused by Virtualbox & has anyone else experienced this?
