Anyway my question is about Windows. QEMU runs fine on Linux so I need no more intervention there.

And I'll be going back to Vista/Vbox/Fedora/QEMU/MyOS for now. If 7 ever calls, I'll fire that up in VBox.

I have same problem on windows 7.... try to use virtual pc until vb tem update that... worked for me....
