I'm the latest Xubuntu, and have created a Windows 2000 VM for running MAME and Alpha Centauri when I'm in the mood for either of those. This worked fine on my main computer, the desktop. However on the laptop, I'm unable to access either USB flash drives or network shares. (I can access optical disks just fine.)
USB
When I open VirtualBox, I get the message Can't enumerate USB devices with
Result Code: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x00004005)
Component: HostWrap
Interface: IHost {d5dcece0-b202-4416-a138-03502784cc07}
I have added my account to the vboxusers group, and have Enabled the USB Controller for the VM. I've tried USB 1.1, 2.0, and 3.0, without success.
NETWORK
I set the VM to Bridged Adapter, pointed to my ethernet port, then physically plugged into the wire (after first trying doing it all by wifi), and the Virtual Cable is connected. In Windows 2000, I'm able to ping my desktop, either by name or IP address. However I'm unable to access my file shares in Windows Explorer. Entering \\peyre on the Address line returns:
\\peyre is not accessible.
The specified server cannot perform the requested operation.
On the host system, I'm able to access my shares via smb://peyre in Thunar. So this suggests the VM isn't able to access SMB, maybe? But no idea what to do about it.
Unable to transfer files to VM
Re: Unable to transfer files to VM
Update: I got USB devices working!
I restarted the laptop (which I probably should have thought to do after adding myself to the vboxusers group), and now I'm able to enumerate USB devices and read from a flash drive.
I'm still unable to access network shares though, nor can I access Web sites on a browser. Can anyone offer any assistance with that?
