Windows 7 guest VM crashs only on linux hosts

Post by vindess »

I've been using virtualbox for couple of years and always used some windows xp, 7 and a 10 guests VM's in my linux pc and copies of those on my windows 10/11 pc. When I replaced my linux pc problems started. I have a Asus Zenbook S16 with AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 processor and my VM's work well under windows 11 host. But when I try the same windows 7 VM's(didn't test the Win10 much) on linux host it will give me a lot of APPCRASH errors os several apps, saying it is clr.dll, or ntdll.dll or kernel32.dll error. I tried on kernels 6.12 to 6.16.8 and all have the same error. I did a new linux instalation later on a external driver and same errors on that S16 but if I connect to my other pc, that has a AMD AMD Ryzen™ 7 7800X3D and boot it up, everything works fine. I have unninstalled and installed .net framework several times and even updated a test copy of a Win7 VM to Win10 and got the same results. Everything is updated on the pc, including bios and tested on virtualbox 7.2.2 as well. I am looking for a way of trobleshooting this. Thank you.

I am seeing the same issue. Visual studio 2019 crashes during startup in my Windows Server 2025 guest on Fedora 43 host. Its always clr.dll crashing. The VM is stored on an exFAT partition so when I reboot the host laptop in Win11 and start the exact same VM, VS2019 runs just fine. FWIW, same exact CPU as you, AMD Ryzen 9 HX 370 (Framework 13 though).

VBox 7.2.4 (I tried 7.2.6, but that has the same issue as well as some weird mouse capture issues so I had to revert).
