VBox 7.1.6 - Linux guest Desktop GUI freeze
Posted: 3. Feb 2025, 12:52
Host: Ubuntu 22.04, kernel 5.15.0-131
Guest: Ubuntu 22.04, kernel 5.15.0-131
VBox 7.1.6 (host, and guest additions), problem also with guest additions 7.1.4 (tested as a downgrade)
Since upgrade from VBox 7.1.4 to 7.1.6, two of my Ubuntu guest VMs experience "desktop freeze" conditions, i.e. the GUI becomes unresponsive. This is independent of whether any application programs are running in the guest OS. But when programs are running, it appears that the freeze occurs earlier. It takes minimum a few hours before such a freeze occurs, but also >48 hours have been observed.
The desktop GUI is unresponsive, but the VM can be shut down with a Machine >> ACPI shutdown signal from the menu.
It is totally unclear what is causing these freezes. VM logs do not reveal any direct information.
The problem does NOT appear in Windows 10 guests.
These problems definitely did not show in VBox 7.1.4 or before.
Any ideas what the problem may be or how to analyse this?
