Guest Additions 7.1.97-165364 completely broken
As mentioned here and here, the abovementioned version of the GAs is completely broken. I installed it on my Windows 11 VM: after the restart, there was no tray symbol but the error message. Therefore, some functions, like mouse integration, also don't work.
I don't know if developers are reading the forum anymore, but I post this information here anyway.

The Guest Additions version mentioned is now 'history'. New Test Build and Development Snapshot updates posted 25 Oct 2024, but I haven't tested yet.uild

Well, the same happens with Guest Additions 7.1.97 r165570 from October 25th.
Upon installation, the installer fails with "Stack cookie corruption" in the error logs along with other error messages.

Re: Guest Additions 7.1.97-165364 completely broken
Fast forward to the end of November and the situation hasn't changed.
As of Virtualbox 7.1.97 r166019 with guest additions r165950 from November 20th, 2024, Windows XP x86 still fails to install them with the same errors displayed above.
I updated the ticket: https://www.virtualbox.org//ticket/22123

This wouldn't help you much, but on my Windows 10 / Windows 11 guest is everything alright now with the latest version of GAs (7.1.97-165950). The abovementioned error was probably fixed, and the dialog from the picture has disappeared.

Well, I'm glad they fixed one version of Windows at least.
The hope is that they're gonna get through all the other versions too.

Re: Guest Additions 7.1.97-165364 completely broken
I run into exact same problem using my VirtualBox on Win11 while logged in to an old "xp x86" machine when I try to install guest editions on it... I am unable to install any VGA driver in this machine do I get a basic VGA 640x480 resolution...

Any solution or workarount yet?
Thanks in advance,
Kleajmp

This has been fixed by Bird and Pentagonik in 7.1.7.
You can download it from here: https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Testbuilds
Go to the one in the middle, i.e "Latest 7.1.x test builds" and it will allow you to install 7.1.7 which addresses the issue.

Thank you for this information!
I installed that version, but when I want to boot the virtual machine I get this error message, the vm is not booting anymore due to this error I guess:

How can I sign this?

Re: Guest Additions 7.1.97-165364 completely broken
Please... "that version" is a meaningless reference because the previous post pointed at the test build page which is frequently updated and currently contains test builds for 7.0, 7.1 and the dev snapshots (currently version 7.1.97). The latter can be quite risky at times.

Re: Guest Additions 7.1.97-165364 completely broken
I noticed that you're on a Windows host, so I wonder whether that might be the problem. Well, that and perhaps secure boot?
No problem for me on 7.1.7 r167550 on Fedora 40 x64 host (no secure boot) with a Windows XP Professional x86 guest.

Re: Guest Additions 7.1.97-165364 completely broken
Yes I am on a Win11 host. The previous version of VirtualBox worked well (except this one xp x86 vm that wont install it's videodrivers), but since this 7.1.7 r167550 update none of virtualmachines are booting any more... I just updated to the latest build 7.1.7 r167625 but still the same error: "the image is required to be signed with the same certificate as the rest of virtual box."
And: "SecureBoot" on this server is switched off in the BIOS/UEFI for sure. (The feature is not my thing.) No idea how a VirtualMachine takes over my customised BIOS settings or uses the defaults?
But first things first. Can any one help me with fixing this certificate error? Maybe after fixing this error it will boot again and I can check if the previous mentioned error is fixed. Would be one step forward

Re: Guest Additions 7.1.97-165364 completely broken
Out of curiosity, have you actually rebooted after installing the new version? If not, then reboot and try again. If you have, then there's probably some leftover from the previous installation that didn't get overwritten. The message itself is bogus because in theory even the test builds are supposed to be signed, so I think that there is probably something leftover in C:\Windows\System32\drivers. Try uninstalling Virtualbox and rebooting. Then go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers, look for any files called "Vbox" and that end up with ".sys" and delete them (there are about 5 of them). Reboot again and then reinstall 7.1.7 r167625 alongside the extension pack. Then reboot again. It should work now.
If and only if it doesn't work even after all this, then go back to 7.1.6 and just use the guest additions from 7.1.7 which should also be fine.
