Nested virtualization problem

Post by x83z24eu »

Hi there,

I'm using Virtualbox 7.1.0 on a windows 10 machine to run Ubuntu 18.04. In this Ubuntu VM, i'm using GNS3 which uses KVM to run a Windows XP machine.
This Windows XP machine is able to start but fails after a minute or so with the blue screen and errors that can change from one boot to the next (PAGE_FAULT being the most frequent) . The machine is also particularly slow.
I understand that this Windows XP machine is rather far from Virtualbox and the problem could come from KVM or Ubuntu but it seems that the version of Virtualbox in use has an impact on whether this VM will work or not. On VB versions<=7.0.2 (including more recent 6.1.50) everything runs perfectly. Only with versions >7.0.2 do I encounter the problem.
I have tried using different guests (Ubuntu 22.04/24.04) and different hosts (Debian 12, and Windows 11) but get the same result.
Has anybody met the same problem ?

Paul
