installing xp guest under vista fails

I installed virtual box under vista home premium SP1 (32 bit) and created a new vm for a xp guest.

when I want to boot and install XP, I get the message "FATAL: no bootable medium found. system halted".
This persists after trying to install with different alternatives:
- from the physical hard drive
- from an iso image
-
- swithing the controller type from PIIX4 to PIIX3 and vice versa
- swithing ACPI and IO APIC on and off
(and in the last two cases, I don't even know what exactly I am doing)

The cd-rom works fine. When I insert the disk under the host, it runs and opens the install screen.

Who can tell me what goes wrong? Where did I miss something?

Is it an XP full install edition?

Or is it something like crappy recovery cd or bundeled to your ahrdware?

Does the CD boot on another real PC?

Is it a new *.vdi or an existing one copied from a disc? Also, did you set the CD to be the first boot drive?

That should not matter. If the hdd is not bootalbe, it should switch to the second boot device in order.
