Ubuntu 24.04 will not consistently boot - systemd-resolved, oomd, timesyncd stall indefinitely

Post by agilis »

Hello,

I am struggling to troubleshoot an issue with Ubuntu 24.04 with the latest version of VirtualBox and Guest Additions (7.0.20 r163906). The issue is that Ubuntu 24.04 will not consistently boot successfully. I have attached a screenshot of what I see on screen every time Ubuntu 24.04 fails to boot successfully.

I have waited for a significant amount of time and I am convinced this "loop" will go on indefinitely. I am forced to power off or reset the machine. I've attached the logs that were available at the time I was experiencing this bootup loop.

I understand that Ubuntu 24.04 is not fully supported by VirtualBox. In my situation, I am on Ubuntu 23.10 and the support of that release has expired. I have been tasked to research the transition to 24.04 for the development team I co-administer. Right now, 24.04 seems to be too unstable with VirtualBox for my development team to use.

Is there an area that I can frequent that allows me to track updates on VirtualBox progress with Ubuntu 24.04?

Thanks in advanced!

I am not 100% certain but I believe this issue was related to low disk space. I have taken the appropriate steps to enlarge the disk my Guest was using and I have not had any issues as of yet. Still monitoring this issue.

UPDATE: Still an issue :(

I can't get Ubuntu 24.04 to get past a hung boot screen. Isn't Ubuntu a major distro and 24.04 a major release? Is it not tested properly? I am not trying to insult developers, I just find it baffling, and rather frustrating that I cannot run this important distro. On Windows 11 Insider Preview (is that what is causing grief?).

Log attached.

The Guest Additions Version 6.0.0 (provide by 'Ubuntu' with in its installer) is not compatible with VirtualBox 7.0.xx because of the programming changes made for the version upgrade, so may be at least part of the problem.

Allocating 6 CPU cores to the Ubuntu Guest when the Host CPU only has 6 physical cores (+ 6 threads) could also cause the Host some problems; and will impact negatively on Guest performance if not needed. Does the software you intend to use on the VM need 6 CPU Cores.

The Guest Additions Version 6.0.0 (provided by 'Ubuntu' within its installer) is not compatible with VirtualBox 7.0.xx because of the programming changes made for the version upgrade, so may be at least part of the problem, but doesn't normally result in a complete VM failure.

Allocating 6 CPU cores to the Ubuntu Guest when the Host CPU only has 6 physical cores (+ 6 threads) could also cause the Host some problems; and will impact negatively on Guest performance if not needed. Does the software you intend to use on the VM need 6 CPU Cores?

The version specific VirtualBox User Manual lists the 'officially' supported Host and Guest operating systems, but what actually works goes well beyond those officially supported versions. The 7.0.20 Manual does not list Ubuntu 24.04 as an officially supported version for Host or Guest; and I don't use Ubuntu (a personal aversion), but a newly installed Linux Mint 22, which is a derivative distro of Ubuntu 24.04, installs and runs well for me as a Guest VM (with 2 CPUs, 2GB RAM and 128MB VRAM).

I hate to say it but I have the same problem with Mint 22 on my system.

I also end up with a frozen VM when I install Guest Additions on Ubuntu 24.04 Desktop. Have someone tried with the latest beta of VB (7.0.21)? Or have someone found a workaround?
