There were several Problems known.

Max 64 MB RAM, 4MB Video RAM, disable Audio, USB, ACPI before Installation.

Why would that be a problem? Win98SE supports all three. You could safely leave the audio disabled (install it later), but ACPI in particular is useful, and installing it after the event is quite painful in Win98SE .

Has anyone tested the Freedos Solution successfully?

I tested this, but by calling "setup.exe" the error "windows required for this program" appears.

For me no problem, because i have running WinDOS Guests and a WinDOS Bootdisc.
Answering myself. My image was wrong (Update Version).

On the freedos-page there was the tip to start "setup.exe /NM /IS". For freedos boot Options there was the tip not to use the "himem" option.

Well, adjusting those settings did it, it actually works now.

So in review, to install 98 without bootable CD but with floppy,

1). insert floppy, start-up, select with cd support, if needed partition and format the drive.

2). boot again with floppy select cd rom support, put cd in drive, and type setup into command prompt.

3). make sure you do not exceed a maximum of 64 MB RAM, 4MB Video RAM during install, otherwise you will cause the installer to crash.

Hello All,

I have FreeDOS installed on my PC. I am trying to install Win 98 SE, but I am also getting the same error 'SUWIN.. Protection Fault in Setupx.dll..'

I tried nearly everything:
1) Disabled USB and Audio
2) Removed exta RAM, so that my RAM is now only 64 MB.
3) Tried disabling internal and external cache

But I could not disable ACPI as there is no such option in my Bios (Award Bios). Can you please suggest a way out?

In your bios??? the options for the VM you need to look at.

I am sorry, I was searching for this problem on Google and came across this forum and was not aware that this forum is about VM.

Anyways, can you help me with this issue, I would be highly obliged.

Please ask in a Forum for Hardware, not here.

Hello,

I have read the postings in this thread and am still confused about how to boot from a legal Windows 98SE CD ROM.

I am a Mac OS X user, trying to install Windows 98 in a VirtualBox VM so that I can install and run an obsolete statistics program from 1999.

The Windows 98SE CD evidently is not bootable; when I lauch VirtualBox with the FreeDOS VM installed and running, the CD’s icon dismisses from my Mac OS X desktop. After I quit the VM, the Windows 98SE CD reappears on the desktop.

I also created a new VM for Windows 98SE, and the same thing happened; when I inserted the CD in my Mac's optical drive, it displayed on the desktop until I turned on the VM, then the CD's icon dismissed from the desktop and returned after I quit the VM.

My Macintosh has a SuperDrive, but no floppy drive.

Could someone please explain to me, in very explicit terms (the last time I used DOS was over 15 years ago!), the necessary steps so that I could install Windows 98SE from the CD into a VirtualBox VM on my Macintosh?

Many thanks in advance!

Barry

Explicit description? No, I'm not a Mac user so can't tell you how to use a Mac.

However, your immediate problem seems to be reading the CD in your host (Mac) CD drive. In my experience it is much easier (i.e. no fights for dominance with the host OS), if you first create an ISO image of the CD and mount it as a virtual CD inside the VM. I can't recommend Mac software for creating ISO images, but in Windows the easiest software I know is the freeware program "imgburn" (this lets you either create an image of a physical CD or DVD, or drag and drop files into a ISO project).

Ok, so you create a new VM with a big unformatted hard disk, and you mount the ISO image as a virtual CD. Make sure the CD comes first in the boot order then start the VM. You will soon find out if your CD is bootable or not. Either way, you can cherrypick appropriate advice from this thread on what to do next.
