Can you play video in your guest OS?

Post by Lucmove »

I have Linux as host. I once played video in a Windows guest VM and it worked fine.

Then I installed Debian as guest. Video playback was so slow and stuttery it was unwatchable.

Then I tried FreeBSD. Same problem.

I am really surprised that a Windows guest VM has better performance than Linux or FreeBSD. Do you have the same experience?

Definately depends on your settings. Just tried, Debian 12 Host, Debian unstable guest, after some settings in mplayer, Audio Alsa and video X11,I can play a video with no problems in the guest.

I made it work with Debian guest. I was using ICH AC97 as sound board, switched to Intel HD Audio. Now it's normal. The Soundblaster 16 option produces no sound.

None of the three options fixes it for guest FreeBSD though. ICH AC97 and Intel HD Audio are horribly slow and Soundblaster 16 makes no sound.
