A virtual machine with an encrypted disk does not start.

Post by romychk »

Good day. The virtual machine did not start today. The disk was encrypted using virtualbox methods, as far as I can see, the Win7.32.vbox file is corrupted, there is no part in it where it is indicated that the disk is encrypted. Is it possible to somehow extract information from this disk if I know the password?

Only if the key store is still present in the .vbox file. Because the password is used to get the encryption key out of the key store, not to define the encryption key itself (otherwise every password change would need re-encrypting the whole data).

No backups?

Check if you still have the Win7.32.vbox-prev file, which is a kind of backup of the Win7.32.vbox file.
