Canceling TAP install creates invalid Ethernet Controller

Post by egetchell »

I accidentally selected the “+” option on Host Interfaces which started the TAP driver installation. I hit “Cancel” at the prompt for the TAP driver notifying you that the driver has not passed Windows Logo Testing and assumed that nothing was installed.

Now, whenever I boot my machine I get prompted for the Add Hardware Wizard and it dies indicating that there are no valid drivers. Looking in the Control Panel under Ethernet Controllers, I see a new controller labeled Unknown Device. If I attempt to remove it in the Control Panel, Windows indicates it can not be removed as the device is required to boot the machine. I see no option to remove this from within Virtual Box. I even tried uninstalling Virtual Box but the controller is still there

Does anyone know how do I remove the this invalid controller?

Other users had the same issue. It appears that they can't even select the driver for installation too, it refuses it. The only way to remove it, is either a reinstall of the Host, or some OS hacking by manually removing files and registry entries. Best thing to do, is just disable it so it won't pop up on every boot.
