Windows VM blue screens then won't shut down, have to reboot entire host
This is an issue that I've been having for many years over many different Linux distros. Currently on Linux Mint 20.1 but had it happen on others.
Essentially if I leave a Windows VM idle, it will eventually crash with a blue screen. At that point I can't do anything with it, it won't let me shut it down or do anything. I end up having to use xkill to get rid of the window but I can't restart it or do anything. The process ends up <defunct> in ps aux and there's nothing I can do other than reboot my whole machine.
Is there a way to prevent this from happening? I recently acquired a piece of hardware in which the web interface requires flash, so I will have no choice but to use an old Windows VM to access it and I really don't want to have to reboot my whole computer every time the VM crashes. It would actually be nice if I could just let the VM idle without even having to worry about it crashing altogether.

We can't say much without a VM log file showing the event. Make sure the VM is fully shut down, then right click it in the manager UI. Select "Show Log" and save "VBox.log" (no other file) to a zip file. Attach the zip here.

Attached is a log, I'm not sure how it works if it creates a new log for each session, if yes this one might not have the right info as I did a manual shut down last time before it crashes so let me know if you want me to include another. There is another with tons of errors but it was too big, even compressed, but the errors are basically repeats of this:

Re: Windows VM blue screens then won't shut down, have to reboot entire host
1024MB is not a lot of RAM for a 64bit Windows OS. I would give it at least 4096MB.
Increase CPU allocation to 2 CPU cores.
Increase graphics RAM to 128MB.
You are using the distro fork of VirtualBox. Note that we don't support that here, likewise the VNC extension pack.
Attend to the above and then let's see where we are.

In addition to what mpack wrote, I'm wondering if your problems relate to the fact that the VM is located on a network share mounted via NFS.

Re: Windows VM blue screens then won't shut down, have to reboot entire host
If the guest OS crashes it shouldn't be taking out the entire host OS though? That's really what the issue is. It basically trashes virtualbox so I can't use it until I reboot the host. I'll try to increase those parameters and see but I feel there is still an underlying problem.
And what is the alternative to the "distro fork". I just did apt-install virtualbox or whatever is the normal way to install stuff in Linux. Not sure about the VNC extension pack I don't recall installing that, it might just come by default. I don't use it.
I increased the settings and will let the VM idle just to see what happens. I'm not sure why I had the ram set that low. I may have done that at some point while trying to troubleshoot this issue or maybe I just went with bare minimum at the time I made the VM. Pretty sure I've had this issue happen with other VMs too though.

Re: Windows VM blue screens then won't shut down, have to reboot entire host
"Not being able to use VirtualBox until a host reboot" and "taking out the entire host OS" are two completely different things. Therefore, I don't understand your question. Can you elaborate?Red Squirrel wrote: ↑22. Oct 2023, 00:21 If the guest OS crashes it shouldn't be taking out the entire host OS though? That's really what the issue is. I still assume that NFS is a major part of the underlying problem. You wouldn't be the first VirtualBox user having problems when using the virtual disk image over a network connection.Red Squirrel wrote: ↑22. See Download VirtualBox for Linux Hosts, especially the part about how to integrate it into the package management of your Linux distribution (e.g. apt). Note that when you go that route, you'll have to uninstall all currently installed VirtualBox packages first (the VMs wouldn't be removed by that), so that you don't end up with a mixture of packages from the different sources.

Re: Windows VM blue screens then won't shut down, have to reboot entire host
So increasing the ram seems to have worked. Although I feel this is not really fixed, as a VM crashing shouldn't be messing the host OS or Vbox itself. I guess I could try to uninstall the distro version and install the other way and see if it's better. I usually prefer to install distro versions of apps though since they update more easily when I do apt upgrade. Though distros tend to be very behind in versions so guess that's a moot point.

Re: Windows VM blue screens then won't shut down, have to reboot entire host
Ok so it ended up doing it again but it took longer. VM sat idle for a few days and eventually blue screened, then the only way to close was to force quit. I can't use virtualbox anymore until I reboot my whole machine. If I try to open it, it just opens two instances in the task bar and nothing happens. If I try to kill -9 the process it just goes as <defunct> and no result either trying to reopen.
This is the behavior I've seen for many years now on may different distros. Linux Mint 20.1 in this case. Am I the only one having this issue?

Please provide the VM's vbox.log for when this BSOD and host reboot occurred.

Which of the multiple involved VirtualBox processes are you talking about? Please provide the output of "ps -elfH".
You should already know my answer to that question.

Here's the log file. (was too big to attach)

And here's output of ps -elfH:
I was terminating the process that had the actual VM running, I don't remember what it was called, I was just doing ps aux and looked for any process that had to do with virtualbox and found the one that had the VM name in it. But I also had to "force quit" within the GUI itself. Kill -9 was just a last attempt since it was not actually dying properly.

Re: Windows VM blue screens then won't shut down, have to reboot entire host
Regarding the VirtualBox processes:
First close the VirtualBox Manager, wait for 5 seconds, and check if the VirtualBox process (child of nemo-desktop process) is gone. The background reason is that the VirtualBox Manager (VirtualBox process) keeps the VBoxSVC process alive, just like any VirtualBoxVM child process does. If the VBoxSVC process is still there afterwards, kill the VBoxXPCOMIPCD and VBoxSVC processes in that order. Try killing without SIGKILL (-9) first. Please report back if that helps.
Regarding your main problem:
Disk I/O issues started occurring after 93 hours, probably leading to the BSOD ~1.5 hours later. For other users, those type of log messages occurred when the virtual disk image (VDI file) was located on worn-out HDDs, worn-out SSDs or networked locations.

Re: Windows VM blue screens then won't shut down, have to reboot entire host
Killing the VBoxSVC and VBoxXPCOMIPCD process seems to have helped. I was able to actually open the manager again. Though if I try to start the VM it just gets stuck at "starting virtual machine...".
I will have to reboot again so that I can start the VM again, and I will try to kill only the VBoxSVC and VBoxXPCOMIPCD when it crashes and see if it helps.
Here is a log file of when the machine hangs starting up:
At that point I need to use xkill to kill the window/process.

Re: Windows VM blue screens then won't shut down, have to reboot entire host
Figured I'd try a different VM just to rule out it being an issue with that particular VM, and it does it with a Linux VM too. If left overnight it will basically lock up the whole Vbox environment and have to force quit everything then it won't open anymore without rebooting.
