Win11 - Einbinden einer Diskette

Post by brand »

Hallo,

Danke

Wer hat einen Tipp für mich?

If Google translates correctly, you're having trouble "integrating" a floppy drive into a Windows 11 VM. But you can do so successfully in a Windows 10 VM.

However, the pictures show a successful addition of a floppy drive and image in the Windows 11 VM.

Can you please describe the problem in more detail?

Hello,

no matter what I do I get a floppy drive showing in my Win11 VM.

Here you can find a simple videorecord: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ANrigY ... sp=sharing

Thanks

Are you trying to say:

Start the VM from full normal shutdown, not save-state. Run until you see the problem happen, then shut down the VM from within the VM's OS if possible. If not possible, close the Virtualbox window for the VM with the Power Off option set.

Right-click the VM in the main Virtualbox window's VM list, choose Show in Explorer/Finder/File Manager. In the "Logs" subfolder, zip the VM's "vbox.log", and post the zip file, using the forum's Attachments tab. (Configure your host OS to show all extensions so you can find the "vbox.log", not "vbox.log.1", etc.)

Thanks for the log. For other readers, the zip file is password protected. PM Brand for the PW if you want to look.

The floppy drive is showing in the VM's "hardware":

Code: Select all

00:00:08.360190 [/Devices/i82078/] (level 2)
00:00:08.360190

00:00:08.360192
00:00:08.360192 [/Devices/i82078/0/Config/] (level 4)
00:00:08.360193 DMA <integer> = 0x0000000000000002 (2)

00:00:08.360195
00:00:08.360195 [/Devices/i82078/0/LUN#0/] (level 4)
00:00:08.360196 Driver <string> = "VD" (cb=3)
00:00:08.360196
00:00:08.360196 [/Devices/i82078/0/LUN#0/Config/] (level 5)
00:00:08.360197 Format <string> = "RAW" (cb=4)
00:00:08.360197 MaybeReadOnly <integer> = 0x0000000000000001 (1)
00:00:08.360198 Mountable <integer> = 0x0000000000000001 (1)
00:00:08.360198 Path <string> = "C:\Users\******\Documents\Privat\ISO\Windows11\Win11-Diskette.IMA" (cb=66)
00:00:08.360199 Type <string> = "Floppy 1.44" (cb=12)
This should indicate that the floppy is presenting to the OS inside the VM.

Check the VM OS's Device Manager to see if the floppy drive is present.

Also, web-search how to show or hide empty drives in Windows 11. It could be that the drive is there but appears empty to Windows, and therefore doesn't get shown. Which may indicate a problem with the image file.

I think Brand should replace it with a zip that is not password protected. Per forum rules the log became community property when it was uploaded. A password makes no sense.

Hello scottgus1,

correct I can see it in my Device-Manager - but not in Win11

The web search was also unsuccessful because there is already data on the diskette.

I don't understand where I have my error of reasoning.

Thanks for checking the Device Manager.

There's a few steps between data on the diskette interfering with a web-search.

Did you find the place in Windows 11's settings to not hide empty drives?

I'm not convinced! ;)

I've added a floppy disk controller and a floppy disk image, which contains only a boot sector and no file system, to a Windows 10 guest. In the Device Manager / Geräte-Manager, the following devices are visible:

Code: Select all

v Diskettenlaufwerkcontroller
     Standard-Diskettenlaufwerkcontroller
v Diskettenlaufwerke
     Diskettenlaufwerk
PS: I'd take a look at your log file, too. ;)

Hello,

attached now the log-files without password.

With a standard log file, log data is also transferred if a standard configuration is used.

The statistics in the VBox.log file indicate that nothing was read from or written to the virtual floppy disk.

FWIW, I found some sources in the Internet claiming that Windows 7 disables the floppy disk drive when being booted by a UEFI BIOS. I couldn't find any official information on Microsofts website about that, though.

Windows 7?

It makes sense to me that a UEFI BIOS doesn't support floppy drives. But that wouldn't stop OS's from supporting them. Perhaps there's something in "OptionalFeatures.exe" that needs to be enabled.

Does anybody know if any 64bit Windows supports floppy drives? I'm wondering if the support code is 16-bit legacy, needing NTVDM.
