I have gotten to the bottom of the problem with Virtualbox.
It is Windows fast startup which is locking NTFS disks.
It does it without you even knowing, sometimes when they apply updates.

It is this that causes the NS_ERROR_Failure and also other issues on LINUX systems lie not able to write to NTFS disks.
