Disk Space Recover

Post by jhomicks1205 »

Hi, I have installed VM and make a space of 10GB for it. I installed windows xp WMC 2005 for testing purpose only. Now I have already "unregistered" the disk due to some hdd space problem. My pc runs only 40 GB capacity and it has only 1 GB remaining and my PC is crawling that's why i have removed the "10GB disk reserve for the VM" but my problem is that it doesn't free up 10 or 9 GB more. What do i need to do to recover my lost HDD SPACE? can somebody help please......thanks in advance.[/b]

Unregistering just makes VBox forget about the VDI file, it doesn't cause the VDI file to be deleted. You have to find the VDI yourself and delete it. By default the VDI can be found in the folder \Documents and Settings\<User account>\.VirtualBox\VDI. Remember also to empty your recycle bin.

Be aware that deleting the VDI destroys all the data stored in the guest.

Beyond that, if your PC is as old as I suspect then IMHO it needs some serious upgrading before it will be very useful for running VMs. A new dual core CPU would be nice, and at least 2GB of host memory, but at the very least a second monster sized hard disk drive would be a good investment that will benefit all your apps. This is very easy if you know what you're doing (eg. you know the difference between IDE/ATAPI and SATA) - if these terms mean nothing to you then you may need to get some advice.

One warning: if you have a very cheap store bought PC then adding extra hardware can strain the (usually undersized) power supply. These are easy and cheap to replace though.

And of course, if your PC is a laptop then you can forget all of the above... :-)
