Windows 1.0/1.0.1 Screen Installation Error

I have a VirtualBox 1.4.0 (the latest I believe) installed on my Win XP Pro host system. I'm trying to install Windows 1.0 (and Windows 1.0.1), the first version of Microsoft's Windows. Don't ask me why I'm installing it. I think the reason is obvious.

I managed to install Windows 1.0 except that once I see the splash screen Microsoft Windows 1.0, I see a garbled screen then goes to a blue desktop with a cursor (hourglass cursor). Then it stops there. Nothing happens after that.

I suspect it is related to the video adapter. When I was installing Windows 1.0 it presented me a selection of video adapters: NGA (and variations of it) and EGA (monochrome, more than 64K colors and etc) but no VGA option. I try all the options but only the EGA options work ("work" here means I was able to see the splash screen at least and that hourglass cursor with blue desktop).

Has anyone managed to install Windows 1.0 and make it work in Virtual Box? If yes, please specify how. Thanks.

I installed Guest Win 1.01, Win 1.03 over DOS 5 on VB 1.4.0 on host Win XP Home SP1. I got the boot splash etc. - just no mouse. For display I selected option 6: EGA (over 64k)... That's how far I got; didn't notice any difference between 1.01 and 1.03 by the way.

I'm using VirtualBox 1.4.0 in a Windows XP Pro SP1 host.
Has anyone managed to install Windows 1.01/1.03 in VirtualBox SUCCESSFULLY?

I didn't used MS windows 1.x and 2.x, But Maybe you need to use MS DOS 2.x or 3.x first, No to use MS DOS 6.22.

Go this web site and download a old version MS DOS to try it again, best wish!

For what it is worth: I tried Win 1.01 over DOS 5.00a on real DX486 and that worked fine. In VBox I get the normal 'usage' screen ("MS DOS Executive") but my boot splash is garbled. I always select the EGA (>64k colors) display option. Note (again) that Win 1.01 does not recognise a PS/2 mouse...
