Problem with 64bit guests on 64bit host

I have a laptop (Dell XPS1530) running 64bit Vista, with an Intel mobile T9300 core 2 duo, but any installation of a guest 64bit OS always fails. I've got the 64bit version of virtualbox, enabled VT-x, and I've ensured that Execution Disabled is enabled in the bios. (I have got 64bit guests running happily on my desktop machine, so I'm pretty sure I've not missed any configuration settings....)

I'm at a loss for what to try next. Any ideas?

Please clarify the cause of failure? At what point does it fail, what is the error message?

When installing a 64bit guest OS, both ubuntu and gentoo say can't find 0x64 cpu, can only find an i686. I've gone through the normal trouble shooting for the problem (I've been able to install 64bit os's as a guest on my home and work desktop's, just can't do the same for my laptop). Wondering if there's a compatability problem with the mobile Intel processors or Intel chipset maybe?

Did you check the manual for what you need to run 64 bit guets? Is your laptop 64 bit and does it have AMD-v or VT-x? And does your motherbord support it? My laptop is 32 bit with a VT-x capable processor, but I can't use VT-x because the motherbord doesn't support virtualisation. Check your BIOS for that.
