Ubuntu root user issue

Post by jax200 »

I have been encountering "user is not in the sudoers file. this incident will be reported" issues lately with Ubuntu installs.

In previous versions of VB with Ubuntu Guest, I never had this problem. I suspect it is something to do with the latest installation GUI/procedure. How to avert this inconvenience?

Are you using the Unattended Install feature?

Try this again, I get the same message post-installation.

It appears with: sudo -i

But su works ok.

@scottgus1 No, otherwise I cannot select my own un, pw and ga.
I also cannot access the VM Settings prior to the install as with earlier VB Manager new installs.
These issues are very annoying! :x

Thanks for the info.

Please post a link to the Ubuntu ISO you're using. I'll try it.

I tried Ubuntu 18.04, 20.04 and 22.04 guests on a Windows 10 host.

I will post a solution to my own question.
When installing a new machine, use 'Skip Unattended Installation', but only after changing the username and password in the next step, then return to the first step. Also select 'Guest Additions'. This also provides a way to go into 'Settings' before launching the machine.
