Vista KBoard & mouse freeze with Linux

Hi, I just downloaded VirtualBox to try it out on Ubuntu... but when I start it up on the "live CD" .iso file, the host keyboard freezes, and the touchpad too.. I was forced to use a seperate mouse. And because the keyboard frozen, the 'host key' isn't active, so I can't get control back :(

The host is Windows Vista, on a Samsung R60 Plus laptop. 2 GB memory, with some of it used by the graphics chip.. 512 MB of memory allocated to the virtual machine.
The guest is Ubuntu 8.10 release candidate

The keyboard & touchpad freezes as in.. I can't even use it on the guest.

Any ideas? Thanks! :)

Does anyone know how to fix this? I really want to use this program :(

My screen doesn't turn black or blue and the screen activity doesn't freeze.
edit: and the VM doesn't actually crash, the KB and touchpad just freeze
edit: The mouse and keyboard are built into the laptop, but the drivers say they are connected via PS/2
edit: doesn't work with Debian either... and discovered a random error, my video driver crashes. ATI 1250, updated just today. It happened once with Ubuntu, before I updated, thought the update would fix it. It seems like a random error.

Just direct me to the proper chapter in the manual, at least ¬_¬

This forum seems very active, but nobody's replying to my simple problem.. but replying to everyone else's more complicated problems... weird, isn't it? :?

I'll see what I get in a week

Could you post your exact VM settings? Maybe you set something wrong. As for the no replies, you problem is a bit vague and has never happened to anyone here on the forums.

I don't know what your problem is, perhaps a problem with the ISO file?

Why not download a readymade Ubuntu 8.10 VDI from here:

i have this same/similar error with ubuntu in vbox and vista as the host. I have not tried it on my other laptop because that does not come out very often. I am also thinking about going back to vmware.

Like I told someone else, it is very interesting that this software freezes or does some wacky with Vista but the other vms out there can handle it very well.

USB devices cannot be shared by both the VM and host. One or the other has control. If you enable USB and let it take over the keyboard and mouse then guess what? They don't work on the host. So either get yourself 2 keyboards and mice or use the default virtualized keyboard and mouse that the VM provides. These appear as PS2 port connected devices through the virtualized i8042 controller. You may loose some of the extra mouse buttons and keyboard keys, but at least you will have proper seamless working. You may be able to fool the guest OS into accepting the extra functions by picking an equivalent PS2 connected device from the same supplier.

I think I used the default one O_o wait, I'll try resetting all the settings

edit: it didn't work.. to VMWare I go :|

Same problem freezing keyboard

I have the same problem using Vista and USB mouse and Keyboard. I also have speakers connected via USB. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to disable USB altogether from the posts here and I don't know how to "use the default virtualized keyboard and mouse that the VM provides."

You should use the 'default' keyboard and mouse automatically if you don't grab the USB from the host.
