W10 host, W7 guest, Viber issues w 3D accel. ON

Post by Peaceful »

Hi there!

VirtualBox 7.0.4 154605
Host: latest Windows 10 x64
Guest: latest Windows 7 x64 (Ultimate)
VBoxSVGA
Guest additions installed

So, with 3D Acceleration turned ON, there's graphical issues in Viber 17.5.1.2 (latest available for Windows 7), namely some colors are inverted or something, and Viber has a hard time being in full-screen mode so e.g. I can't hit a button because in fact it's placed somewhere else other than where I see it on the screen. And sometimes Windows 7 crashes after I start Viber and try to open its window.
Turning 3D Accel. OFF in VirtualBox settings "fixes" the issue.

Tried stuff from mesa fdossena com (I believe Viber uses OpenGL) but with no success.

Here's how it looks with 3D Acceleration ON:

(you can clearly see visual issues)
And here's with 3D Acceleration OFF:

(this is how it normally looks)

Did it. Now hopefully the devs will look into it. Thanks.

Actually, I should have asked for a VM log too. Make sure the VM is fully shut down, then right click it in the manager UI. Select "Show Log" and save "VBox.log" (no other file) to a zip file. Attach the zip here.

In the meantime, that is certainly a strange problem. However color inversion does not explain it. I notice that the blue in the top part of the logo to the left of the "Opendatabot" caption is the same in both cases, as is the light blue checkbox beside it - so it is NOT the case that something in VirtualBox is changing the colors (e.g. swapping red and blue). The only thing I see with changed colors are fonts, and that means it isn't done by VirtualBox, which has no fine scale interference feature - e.g. interfering in font rendering only.

Something in the guest is reacting differently depending on the level of graphics acceleration, that is what causes the rendering differences.

p.s. A tip for the future: when you want us to analyze an image, do NOT jpeg it! JPEG produces a replacement image that looks ok to a human eye, and takes less space, but all of the genuine fine detail is lost and false chroma detail is added. This is called "lossy compression". Use PNG format instead, as PNG only does lossless compression. PNG works very well on computer screenshots.

Attached them.
3D Accel ON - visual glitches and misplaced vertically Viber window.
3D Accel OFF - no visual glitches/window displacement, but Viber videos won't play within the Viber app.

Thanks for the log, but I already predicted the answer in my previous post.

It's not only Viber, you know.
The PowerShell ISE window also stays misplaced so you've no idea where to press to actually get any button: https://i.imgur.com/24iAdoG.png
And as for the MS Office 2016 programs (Excel, Outlook, Word) - their windows don't even really show, just some mess instead: https://i.imgur.com/Cchiw1s.png

The host machine has an NVIDIA GPU (GTX 1660 series) and the latest graphics driver.
Can't you replicate the issue? Or just no one cares about Windows 7 as a guest OS?

As I said above, I don't see how this can be a VirtualBox issue. Font rendering is a software procedure, typically part of the OS. I know of no mechanism in VirtualBox that could break and only result in the color of fonts changing. If the VirtualBox graphics card breaks you get black screen or a crash. Nothing subtle.

I suggest you look to answers inside the guest OS. Unfortunately I'm not a serious Linux OS user, so I'm not in the position to offer suggestions in that area.

It's quite clear the rendering is messed up, not "only the colors" but also visual placement and in case with MS Word, Excel, Outlook, etc. - the windows don't show at all, just some garbage.

Did this issue show in 6.1?

For problems with 7.0 graphics:

7.0 is still in bug-hunt phase, and graphics had a code change.

Please upgrade to latest 7.0 Virtualbox, Extension Pack if used, and Guest Additions.

If this does not get a stable VM, and you have 3D acceleration turned on, try running the VM with 3D acceleration turned off. If that stabilizes the VM, please note that this happened.

Please create a ticket in the Bugtracker with the problem description, the manufacturer and model of the host PC's graphics card, the graphics driver version (on the host OS), and a (zipped) VBox.log file.

Then you could downgrade Virtualbox, Extension Pack and Guest Additions to 6.1.42, or at least the Guest Additions. 3D acceleration won't be possible if you only downgrade the GAs. For full 3D acceleration using the old stable code, downgrade all three.
