For your Ubuntu issue, it's because you are trying to boot/install the 64 bit version of that OS. You need a few additional options to be able to run 64 bit guests. See the manual chapter 1.6 and/or the VirtualBox FAQ for what is needed.

For the other issues, what have you tried? Did you try to search as we ask in the Forum Posting Guide? See that Guide too for instructions for an Opening Post.

ive tried 7 versions of linux only 2 of which were x64. ive tried vga safe mode in all. ive tried putting my video down to 16 bit. ive tried verbose mode. ive tried setting the resolution down. ive tried booting them from live dvd. ive tried booting them from iso. with pclinux os i get as far as the mouse then it just sits there, with the rest i get to what ive showed in the picture and that is it. seems to me that the desk top is not loading ive also tested all of the distros on live cd and they all work perfect. With the pclinuxos and the minime from live cd you get a few dialog boxes to setr up the network before fully booting into the os but when i run it in virtual box i get no dialog at all and ive watched it in verbose mode everything seems to load with no errors. Like i said this all worked perfect with no problems 2 days ago the only thing that has changed is that i got a couple of updates for vista last night. So what im gonna do now is go back to a restore point where this thing worked before the updates and if that doesnt work ill prolly just say screw it.

In case anyone has the same problem just set the vm os to use more ram the default is 64mb i set it to over 1gb and it booted right in it wasnt getting enough to boot the desktop and or i wasnt waiting long enough. if you notice it taking a really long time to boot just up the ram. thx

If you would have taken the liberty to check the system requirements for the distro you were trying to run, you would see that you would need at least 128 to run the GUI. More is always better, but you have to leave some for the Host, or that will crash eventually because of lack of memory.
