Network doesn't work at work (but at home)

Post by gebauer »

Dear all,

I assure you I searched the forum and the net, but I was unable to find the proper answer. Potentially, because I'm lacking the right search phrase. However, I'm happy if someone can point me in the right directions.

I've sucessfully isntalled Fedora 9 on a Windows XP host. The VM is configured to pass network through by NAT. It works fine when I connect through wireless/DHCP at home, but stops working when windows is connected via fixed IP at work. Linux does see a network (prob. the emulated from the VM) but is unable to connect or even ping any adress (not even in the local domain).

Any tipps?

Best,
Jan

Hi and welcome to our forum. You might want to take this opportunity to browse the Forum Posting Guide. This contains some useful tips on how to search for VBox knowledge and how to frame Qs.

To the specifics of your Q, "Network doesn't work" could mean a lot of things. For a start your will find that ICMP is not translated through NAT so you won't be able to ping from your guest anyway. Can you open http://66.102.9.99/ in your guest browser (or wget it if you are running a server config). If so then the problem is to do with DNS search lists. Use the search tip to find out more.
